 | Of wigs, itchy pants and musicals |

SINGAPORE: Singer Taufik Batisah battled his way through many rounds of competition to become the very first Singapore Idol, a nod to his talent and ability.
But it will be a whole new ball game for Taufik when he makes his stage debut, alongside some of Singapore theatre's veteran players such as Lim Yu Beng and Sebastian Tan, in the upcoming Dick Lee musical "Fried Rice Paradise".
Acting live for the first time may be daunting, but Taufik has Lee and the rest of the experienced cast to guide him along.
Taufik's more immediate concerns were about the wig he has to wear and a tight pair of plaid bellbottoms that bothered him no end.
"It's funny that people think it's real hair," mused Taufik during a publicity event for the production, as he pulled on a lock of hair on his wig.

| Fried Rice heats up |
 A REVIVAL of a Dick Lee musical has sold 12,000 tickets even before it has offically gone on sale on Sistic.
Fried Rice Paradise, starring popular local singer Taufik Batisah, is a high-sheen, star-studded production commissioned by the People's Association (PA) to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
The show, which is produced by the Singapore Repertory Theatre, runs at the Esplanade Theatre from Aug 20 for three weeks. So far, holders of the PAssion card can buy tickets.
Ticket sales for the public start on Saturday. There are more than 30,000 tickets left. Part of the production's draw is Taufik, who is making his theatrical debut in this play. He will play the role of Johan, a hardworking and helpful guy-next-door living in 1970s Jalan Calamansi, the fictional street where the musical is set.

| Taufik gets 'ANUGERAH BINTANG MANJA' |
 CONGRATULATIONS! Taufik Batisah!
Taufik has been awarded ‘Anugerah Bintang Manja’.
The award was presented to Taufik at the post event reception of Suria Elektra Show, where he had performed earlier the hit song, 'Sesuatu Janji'.
The award was presented in conjunction with MANJA’s 10th Anniversary.
He is one of the two recipients. The other recipient is Najib Ali.
Once again, CONGRATULATIONS! TAUFIK!

SINGAPORE: The upcoming Youth Olympic Games is an event that showcases the best young athletes but come September, it might also be a chance for young musicians to show off their artistic flair.
The Sing! Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games committee is making the final call to all musicians to submit compositions for the Sing! Singapore project as the deadline draws closer.
The project aims to encourage celebration of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games through music and creative expression, provide more opportunities for community participation, involvement and ownership of the Games among Singaporeans and to promote the Olympic Values.

 With a famous singing uncle, A Ramlee and aunt, Maria Bachok (both are pop yeh yeh icons in the ‘60s and ‘70s) in the family, it comes as no surprise that Taufik Batisah has chosen music as his career.
“Music is in my blood,” enthuses the Singapore idol winner. “I grew up realizing that I’m good at doing nothing else but singing and writing my own music.” Well, not that the 28 year old fancies doing other jobs anyway.
Prior to winning the first Singapore idol in 2004, Taufik was already fronting his own band, Bona Fide and toured Malaysia as well as Singapore with our very own Cat Farish, formerly of Ruffedge. “Bona Fide does R&B and hip-hop,” he clues us in. “My best friend, who’s in the band with me, is a rapper.”
Taufik Batisah tells Noorsila Abd Majid that he’s pretty much the same guy who won the First Singapore Idol five years ago.
